1. Place a trash can nearby. If you don't want to use a full-sized trash can, you can use an empty bucket or an empty cat litter container as a dedicated receptacle for cat waste. It is important to keep the bin close to the litter box to avoid scattering waste or litter on the floor.
2. Wear disposable gloves and consider wearing a face mask. *Toxoplasma gondii* is a parasite carried by some cats and transmitted through their feces. Even if you aren't handling the feces directly, cleaning the litter box can kick up dust, which may irritate your lungs and potentially spread toxoplasmosis.
3. Scoop out solid waste. Cat feces should be removed at least once a day. Some experts even recommend scooping solid waste twice daily to keep the box exceptionally clean. If you allow solid waste to accumulate, your cat might refuse to use the litter box, even if the litter was changed just a few days ago.
4. Scoop out urine clumps. If you use clumping litter, your cat's urine should form solid clumps. These should be removed daily, just like the feces. If you do not use clumping litter, sprinkle a layer of baking soda on the bottom of the box before adding the litter; this helps absorb odors from any urine that might be missed during daily scooping.
5. Replace any lost litter. If you clean the box daily, you may lose some litter-either because it sticks to the waste or simply spills out during cleaning or use. Topping up the litter every few days helps keep the box clean and inviting for your cat.
